“April is National Donate Life Month, and we couldn’t think of a better time to unveil this new partnership,” said President and COO Alan Mattson. “Organ donation is a significant issue that has touched many lives, mine included. Organ donation saved Mattson’s father-in-law’s life. After being on dialysis for several years and in poor health, he received a kidney through the efforts of Legacy of Life Hawaii.

Legacy of Life Hawaii is the only organization in Hawaii that is federally designated to recover organs for transplant. The mission of the nonprofit is to save and enhance lives through recovering organs and tissues for transplant; encourage organ donation through community outreach and education; and honor and support organ donors and their families. Its staff works very closely with the hospitals in Hawaii to promote the importance of organ donation and its impact on the general community.

Patients needing transplants outnumber donors. There are more than 118,000 people awaiting an organ transplant in the U.S., including 438 in Hawaii.  Every week, more than 100 people on the national transplant waiting list die because no organ is available. On a daily basis, 79 Americans receive lifesaving organ transplants and thousands more benefit from cornea and tissue transplants. These extraordinary gifts have been generously donated by ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds who took just a few minutes in a busy day to indicate their decisions to become organ and tissue donors.
